Hi All,
Those who have stumbled accross this site will have likely noticed that I haven’t been too pro-active with my posting. Whilst I was trying to spend some solid time writing entries that capture everything I want to. It really hasn’t gone anywhere.
For that reason, I am now opening the site to the public. Please contribute as you like… add posts on Goalkeeping equipment that you use, Discuss Goalie technique, and review the history of the game!
I’d like to see shotstopper become the number one goal keeping resource on the net. Lets capture a global knowledge!
If you would like to post, please do so. Using the categories provided you can also organise your posts to ensure they fall in the right areas.
Till next time, have fun between the sticks.

A basic step often neglected, catching the ball and positioning of your hands is one of the most basic and fundemental techniques that a goalkeeper should learn. Good hands can make a difference between a average goalkeeper, who drops the ball every now and then and concede’s an easy goal, and a excellent keeper who holds on to all the shots that he needs to.
Later, I’ll post about catching vs. parrying / punching, but for now, we’ll look at the following techniques used to handle varying types of shot.
- Catching High shots / crosses above the head
- Catching Mid-range shots
- Stopping Low shots
- Diving and stopping the ball

Coaches, Please take note of the basics specified in this video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRlHN1NX4gU
- Head Rock Steady, tilted slightly forward
- Eyes locked onto flight of ball
- Feet shoulder width apart, on the soles of the feet
- Hands slightly outside the line of the body, at waist hight
- Palms of the hands should be facing each other, with fingers facing the ground at and angle
Training is the number one thing that will improve your keeper, so ensure that you give them the attention that they require at your training sessions, and ensure that they are not standing between the sticks waiting for something to happen.
